Write to your MP: No funding cuts for women and girls

This week, the UK’s Minister for Development, Baroness Chapman, signalled that gender equality and education may be deprioritised in the next foreign aid budget. This is deeply concerning, given clear evidence that past cuts hit women, girls, and marginalised groups the hardest.

Vital services are now at risk, including:

  • Sexual and reproductive healthcare
  • Protection from violence
  • Access to education
  • Support for women with disabilities

“The Minister has spoken in favour of gender mainstreaming (having support for gender running as a thread through all areas), and this is also vital—but it cannot replace funding focused specifically on meeting the needs of women and girls.”

– Alexandra Webber, UK Policy & Advocacy Manager at Womankind Worldwide

 MP LETTER TEMPLATE

Dear [MP name and title]

Re: UK aid cuts and women and girls

I am writing to you as a constituent, with significant concerns about the government’s recent suggestion that it will cut funding to women and girls within the UK’s foreign aid budget.

In a crisis, women and girls are hit first and worst. When wars break out, it’s women who flee with children on their backs. When food runs short, it’s women who go hungry first. When schools close, it’s girls who stay home. And when budgets are cut, it’s women and girls who are left behind. Gender equal societies are more prosperous and healthier, making investing in gender equality a good thing for everyone. In spite of this, the government has indicated that it is programming for women and girls that will be cut from the budget.

I’m deeply concerned about the decision not to prioritise women and the impact these cuts will have.

I would like to see the UK government leading the way in protecting and advancing the rights of women everywhere. Before the Spending Review I urge you, as my MP, to champion my views in parliament and ask the government to protect standalone aid funding for women and girls.

I hope you will join me in using your voice to stand alongside the women who need it most. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely
