An enduring repressive regime
For decades Ugandans bore the brunt of a series of wars, military coups and oppressive regimes. Ugandans still face a great deal of government imposed oppression.
A diverse and determined women’s movement
Despite this, women’s rights have come a long way in Uganda with a number of laws being passed to protect women’s rights. The women’s movement in Uganda is one of the most diverse and progressive movements in Africa and has achieved significant progress in the fight for women’s rights over the last 30 years.
Increasingly restrictive society
Even with the achievements of the women’s movement, women are continually having to counter an environment which is increasingly hostile to those working on human rights issues. In particular women rights activist working on lesbian, bisexual and trans (LBT) rights have dealt with an increasing abuse of their rights.
Working with our partners in Uganda
The women’s movement in Uganda is diverse and thriving, yet they still face huge barriers to achieving the rights for those most discriminated against including LBT people and women in rural areas. We work with partners in Uganda to sustain the women’s movement so they can tackle issues such as female genital mutilation, forced evictions and champion the rights of women with disabilities.
The history of the women’s movement in Uganda tells us that change is possible and together we can support women and girls to change their world.
