How do you put feminism into action at Womankind?
I am passionate about creating environments that are sensitive to differences, where women can be themselves without fear and have fair and equal opportunities to fulfil their potential. Particularly, where women’s true voices can be heard. As a trustee, I will help Womankind on this journey as we work towards making this a reality.
Tell us about your feminist journey?
I grew up in Sri Lanka. My family and I left when I was 11 due to the civil war. This legacy has stayed with me and I think a lot about the people I left behind. Perhaps motivated by this, as a young adult I took a volunteer opportunity in a remote village in Cameroon. I started working with women’s groups and learnt about their lives and daily struggles. I now work in the City of London and, however different, I realise the central role that our experience of work – remunerated or not – has in shaping our feminist identity, regardless of what or where it is.
A feminist hero of yours?
Arundhati Roy has for a long time inspired me – from when I first read her book and then learnt about all the brave work she does in activism and fighting for political rights.
