AWESOME Joint Statement on Violence Against Women and Girls and Women’s Participation and Leadership
The AWESOME consortium (the seven organisations that implement the Advancing Women’s Engagement: Strengthening Opportunities to Mobilise for Equality – AWESOME – programme) have collaboratively developed a joint statement in response to ACHPR 73rd Ordinary Session.
What is the ACHPR?
The African Charter established the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and was inaugurated on 2 November 1987 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Commission’s Secretariat has subsequently been located in Banjul, The Gambia. In addition to performing any tasks entrusted to it by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, the Commission is officially responsible for three major functions:
- Protection of human and people’s rights
- Promotion of human and people’s rights
- Interpretation of the African Charter
The ACHPR is composed of eleven Commissioners, who are nationals of Member States of the African Union elected in their individual capacity. The ACHPR meets four times a year and these meetings are called Ordinary Sessions.
The statement was read out by Sophie Kaibiria from FIDA Kenya at the session in October 2022. The statement links to the key objectives under the AWESOME programme nuancing the key themes of violence against women and girls (VAWG) and women’s participation and leadership (WPL) as linked towards the world of work and overall, the ILO (International Labor Organization) Convention 190 and its accompanying Recommendation 206.
