AWESOME (multi-country)

Advancing Women’s Engagement: Strengthening Opportunities to Mobilise for Equality is a programme that aims to strengthen the women’s movement across Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda.

AWESOME – Advancing Women’s Engagement: Strengthening Opportunities to Mobilise for Equality – is a 5-year advocacy programme to support women’s movements in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda to work in partnership, and be strengthened and more representative of diverse groups of women, with a focus on the equal participation of women with disabilities in feminist movements.

Strengthened and truly representative of women who have faced marginalisation, we are determined to be the stronger collective voice needed to challenge social norms that hold back gender equality and advance progressive policies that support the realisation of women’s rights, advance women’s participation and leadership and work to end to sexual and gender-based violence.

AWESOME brings together seven women’s rights organisations sharing the same values and vision for women’s rights, equality and feminist principles yet with diverse approaches and constituencies. The AWESOME Consortium purposefully includes a mainstream women’s rights organisation (WRO) in each country (each with a different area of expertise relating to policy and advocacy and position within the women’s movement covering access to justice, finance and budgeting, and women’s economic rights respectively) combined with a women’s rights organisation working with women with disabilities (DWRO). AWESOME launched in 2021 and is a strategic partnership with the Government of the Netherlands and funded  by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The AWESOME Consortium

The programme works at three levels

The AWESOME Consortium believe that behaviour has multiple levels of influence, and change happens when you address these different dimensions simultaneously. Following this approach, AWESOME works at three levels of influence: Self, Society and Formal Institutions.

Self

Providing safe spaces for women’s rights organisations and women’s rights organisations working with women with disabilities to come together and increase collaboration and solidarity.
